This morning, none of the clients could see any of the shares (mostly located on a win 8.1 system). Of course, the files on the external USB HDD can be accessed directly from the WinXP-home machine through the "My Computer" panel, so the HDD is working properly. Pinging IP addresses in either direction worked consistently, BUT pinging COMPUTER-NAME in either direction would NOT work. Vista never remembers the right username for the mappings.
