Finally, one last desperate search later, I came across this thread and in the same search this page suggesting two methods I hadn't tried. I have an NVIDIA graphics card like many people in these comments. Everything works great now. Hard Drive Light Stays On All The Time The system freezes, sometimes for just a few seconds and sometimes permanently and I have to do a hard shutdown. Unfortunately, this may mean leaving the computer on for a while & not touching it. (Unless of course its unique to a sequence of events.) Verified that all temperatures are well below maximums, haven't seen the GPU over 50, and haven't seen the CPU over 40-45.
