simple fix, but rather stupid for the nvidia drivers to change that setting on its own. So for example, my default sound output had not switched to another device and was still set exactly as it always had been. After installing an EVGA GeForce GT 730 card in it, I lost my sound. Already re-installed 5 times trying to figure out the previous issue. I have had less problems too with W8.1, W8 still acted quite poor. Nvidia Hdmi No Sound Tried every possible way to make things work.

Following the upgrade, I fully clean-installed all NVidia related software, so I am running the absolute newest GeForce Experience and graphics driver (353.62).
